Control Systems Engineer

We now have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Commissioning Engineer to join our successful Controls team here at TGW Northern Europe 

The Commissioning Engineer plays a key role in the TGW Customer Unit North Europe Controls Team, supporting the successful delivery of our projects. They are responsible for creating software, emulating, and commissioning Level 2 Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems. They also oversee system testing for our automated material handling solutions. They interact with Commissioning Leads, the Project Management Controls team, Engineering Design, and clients at our UK Head Office and various installation sites across the UK and Europe

We have some really exciting exciting projects coming up that will test even the most experienced controls engineer. Our newest contract win is for the M&S flagship DC in Daventry. This is a very technologically advanced site with a huge amount of robotics and opportunity for a Lead Controls Engineer to really make their mark.

WHAT YOU’LL BE HANDLING

  • Assist the Lead Commissioning Engineer with third party interface documents during pre-site phase
  • Support the development of functional design specification for PLCs during the pre-site phase
  • Generate PLC module lists
  • Develop PLC code using TGW standard tools and ensure version control compliance
  • Conduct PLC and subsystem emulation as per requirements in pre-site phase
  • Ownership of PLC areas/products, managing software, hardware, or electrical issues
  • Conduct full Level 2 PLC commissioning, including Level 1 sign-off, software implementation for assigned PLC areas, achieving manual and automatic control, commissioning WCS/WMS system communications, testing and verifying emergency stop systems and third-party equipment integration and testing
  • Diagnose and resolve software, hardware, and electrical faults
  • Collaborate with Lead Commissioning Engineers, Commissioning Engineers, Systems Integration Testers, Systems Integration Managers and Project Managers to verify PLC functionality
  • Test system performance and verify nodal and system rates
  • Attend daily stand-up meetings to track progress, discuss issues, and allocate resources
  • Maintain clear communication with the Controls Services Manager(s), and the commissioning team
  • Update check sheets and progress trackers per TGW processes
  • Follow software revision and backup processes, ensuring team compliance
  • Report changes and modifications to the project and design teams
  • Adhere to health & safety regulations and promote a positive safety culture
  • Represent TGW, upholding company standards and best practices
  • Support technical development and mentorship of Junior Commissioning Engineers and Apprentices
  • Contribute to best practice development with the Controls Services Manager(s) and wider team
  • Promote continuous process improvements in efficiency

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • Minimum NVQ level 3 / City & Guilds in electrical engineering 
  • Ability to work within a team and co-ordinate activities when required 
  • Proven experience of generating PLC code (ideally using Siemens PLC’s) 
  • Knowledge and experience of commissioning and testing automated systems 
  • Good of understanding of control systems including Networking & hardware components, Fieldbus technology i.e. Profibus, Profinet, ASi and Motion control via inverters and servo drives 
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel internationally (80%) 
  • Good fault finding and diagnostic skills 
  • Good technical product knowledge 
  • Tools (Microsoft Office, Navision, ACAD, Budget, Doxis) 
  • Willingness to support Junior Commissioning Engineers and Apprentices
