Applications Engineer
As an Applications Engineer, you’ll work within a multi-functional team and play a key role in the sales bid process - helping to turn customer requirements into practical, cost-effective automation solutions.
This isn’t a pure design role - and it’s not a pure sales role either.
You’ll sit at the intersection of both: designing 2D and 3D system layouts based on proven and bespoke solutions, while ensuring everything proposed is technically robust, commercially viable, and aligned to customer needs.
Working closely with internal teams and customers, you’ll contribute directly to winning new business, shaping solutions that are not only innovative but deliverable.
WHAT YOU’LL BE HANDLING
You will:
- Find intelligent, practical solutions to meet customer requirements
- Create 2D and 3D layout designs using CAD tools (e.g. AutoCAD)
- Develop and refine solution concepts in collaboration with the project team
- Be actively involved in technical discussions, challenging and shaping customer requirements where needed
- Produce detailed descriptions of conveyed goods (size, weight, barcodes, etc.) within proposals
- Specify and explain internal and third-party logistics equipment
- Present layouts and mechatronic solutions confidently to customers
- Perform calculations including system performance, storage dimensions, and cost comparisons
- Support equipment selection and technical validation (internal and third-party)
- Create cost calculations for mechanical and control systems
- Support the handover to project delivery teams, ensuring solutions are ready for execution
- Ensure compliance with relevant engineering standards, guidelines, and processes
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
We’re looking for someone who combines engineering expertise with commercial awareness, and who enjoys solving complex, real-world problems.
Essential:
- Experience in an Applications Engineer, Proposals Engineer, Mechanical Design Engineer, Project Engineer or similar role
- Strong experience with AutoCAD or similar CAD software
- Confident working with both internal stakeholders and customers
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively
- A structured, systematic approach to problem-solving
- Confident user of MS Office applications
Nice to have:
- Experience with Trimble, SketchUp, or other 3D design tools
- Knowledge of mechanics, automation, and logistics processes
- Familiarity with controls / PLC engineering concepts
- Experience with third-party equipment (e.g. racking systems, labelling machinery, sorting systems)
- Awareness of competitor solutions and technologies
