Applications Engineering Team Leader

As an Applications Engineering Team Leader, you’ll lead a team responsible for developing designs, concepts, and costings for automated material handling systems.

You’ll combine team leadership with hands-on involvement in solution development, ensuring proposals are practical, competitive, and deliverable.

Working closely with internal teams and customers, you’ll play a key role in the sales bid process, helping to shape solutions that drive new business.

WHAT YOU’LL BE HANDLING

You will:

Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Applications Engineers
Set priorities and manage workloads to ensure high-quality, consistent output
Drive the development of intelligent, cost-effective solutions to meet customer requirements
Oversee the creation of 2D and 3D layout designs using CAD tools (e.g. AutoCAD)
Support and guide the team in developing and refining solution concepts
Be actively involved in technical discussions, challenging and shaping customer requirements where needed
Review and validate material flow concepts, system performance, and design assumptions
Ensure accurate equipment selection (internal and third-party) across all solutions
Oversee the creation of cost calculations, including mechanical and control systems
Review and approve technical proposals and documentation
Support the sales bid process, particularly on complex or high-value opportunities
Engage with customers, including presentations of layouts and technical solutions
Ensure smooth handover to project delivery teams, maintaining solution integrity
Drive compliance with engineering standards, guidelines, and internal processes
Identify opportunities to improve team capability, processes, and overall solution quality

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

We’re looking for someone who combines strong technical expertise with leadership capability and commercial awareness, and who enjoys developing people as well as solving complex problems.

Essential:

Experience in an Applications Engineer, Solutions Engineer, or similar role
Previous experience leading, mentoring, or supporting engineers
Strong experience with AutoCAD or similar CAD software
Ability to understand and guide end-to-end system design
Confident working with both internal stakeholders and customers
Strong communication skills and ability to influence at different levels
A structured, systematic approach to problem-solving and team management
Good commercial awareness, including costing and proposal development
Confident user of MS Office applications
